As per the claims of the manufacturers, such rod attracts lightning from a distance of up to 110 meters, thereby protects an area of up to 200 meters (dia). They are also called early streamer emission (ESE), or controlled streamer emission (CSE) lightning protection systems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-1n6ik\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">As such the illusory idea of one rod protecting 200 meters (dia) looks impressive, added with names such as advanced, modern and active lightning rods, with a test certificate from CPRI strengthening this belief. In India, nearly 70% of industrial and commercial LPS installations use ESE type LPS. Due to the apparently fascinating story, the system seekers believe that this \u201cactive\u201d method is \u201cmodern and advanced\u201d in comparison to the \u201cpassive\u201d \u201cconventional\u201d franklin rod which is 250 years old. Electrical managers are attracted towards this illusion and raise only one question \u201chow many meters will it protect??\u201d. There are claims that even these rods protect an entire village or a town !!!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block15\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-ctmmn\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">In most of the cases of ESE systems used in India, the single down conductor that runs from the lower end of the air-termination to the ground level is insulated by a material cover which is claimed to be a high voltage insulation. Thus, it is separated from the rest of the structure. There are cases where the length of the down conductors is more than 100 meters. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block17\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-5nofa\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The down conduct is then connected to a chemical earth pit which is claimed to dissipate the lightning current easily into the earth due to some \u201cadvanced chemical content\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block19\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-ckp8m\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>The claim (protects 100\u2019s of meters)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block21\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-bmdh2\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The French standard NFC17-102 is the first standard which propagated ESE rods. With reference to this standards the manufacturers claim that \u201csince ESE rods are efficient than a franklin rod in sending an upward streamer towards the downward leader of the lightning, probability of interception by ESE rod is little higher than a conventional rod\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-9nfti\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The difference in the time of initiation of the upward streamer by a conventional rod and an ESE rod is the \u201ctime advancement\u201d of an ESE air termination (\u2206t). Then considering a streamer speed of 106 m\/s, the ESE manufacturers claim that their rods have a height advancement of \u2206t \u00d7 106 m over the conventional rod. The value of \u2206t is computed by observations of 2 m long rod \u2013 rod gap applied with laboratory sparks as per the NFC 17-102 and then extrapolating the results to many tens of meter long upward leader. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block25\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-c7mjs\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Scientific communities, including the leading Standard committees in the world, strongly reject these claims, as the available experimental and theoretical knowledge falsify the computation method of \u2206t. Even the speed of the answering leader is measured to be 104 &#8211; 105 m\/s, as per the latest fast video techniques available at present. This results in 10 -100 times decrease in the efficiency (height advancement) of these rods. The working principle of these rods are included either in IS standards or in IEC and most other international\/national standards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block26\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div id=\"viewer-c6fok\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/f51a2a_05f17bc7943c452d8ea422476f511cc7~mv2.png\/v1\/fill\/w_925,h_1521,al_c,q_90,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/f51a2a_05f17bc7943c452d8ea422476f511cc7~mv2.png\" alt=\"\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/capedigital.wixsite.com\/demo\/post\/lightning-protection\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/f51a2a_05f17bc7943c452d8ea422476f511cc7~mv2.png\/v1\/fill\/w_1310,h_2154,al_c,q_95\/f51a2a_05f17bc7943c452d8ea422476f511cc7~mv2.png\" data-load-done=\"\" \/><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/div>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block27\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block29\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-bflro\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>Explanations from the standard NFC17-102<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-45uqc\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Even if we consider the NFC17-102 is acceptable, the methods practised in India becomes highly questionable. The system as per the standard is shown in figure B4 consisting of <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-dmbne\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">1. ESE air terminal;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-36m46\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">2. Down conductors (several down conductors are necessary);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-bamh6\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">3. One specific earth electrode for each down conductor and a foundation earthing system;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-97g1s\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">4. Several equipotential bonding between the building metal parts and LPS.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block38\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-nkcd\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">As such, the standard explains about a proper equipotential bonding system and a LPS, rather than isolating the down conductor which may cause dangerous potential differences between the down conductor and the nearby metallic parts of the structure. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block40\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-db47o\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The standard also explains about the conditions of multiple down conductors, methods of calculating separation distance, methods of equipotentialisation, conditions with which efficiency <em>(radius of protected area) <\/em>is reduced etc.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block42\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-7ruor\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">In contrast, the installations in India follow a deceptive concept and claim that are conforming to NFC17-102 standard. Other than the air terminal, one down conductor and an earth pit &#8211; balance safety measures recommended in the standard are missing in India, making the installation highly vulnerable to lightning strike. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block44\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-7ffbv\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>CPRI test<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block46\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-3nm\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">NFC17-102 recommend the ESE rod to be tested to prove its \u2206t, as this is the most important parameter deciding the controversial protection radius. However the rods sold in India are tested with a totally different concept. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block48\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-fcl7f\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">ESE rods sold in India are tested at CPRI for a short time current flow of few kA\u2019s. This test at CPRI have no relation to the ESE concept. However users accept this test report as a proof of the efficiency of ESE rods.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block50\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-amc9k\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Tenders and purchase notices published in media show that ESE rods with CPRI test report have become a normal practice in various government agencies. This nonstandard method is also accepted by safety agencies such as the electrical inspectorates in few states.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block52\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-4b12g\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>Dangers of advanced\/modern LPS installation, recommendation not to use by NBC-2016<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block54\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-2b229\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">ESE systems installed in Industrial, Commercial, High-rise, Explosive areas (oil and gas industry), Power generating stations, Telecom SOLARPV, &#8230;. &#8230;. pose a serious threat to the building and its contents. National Building Code of India (NBC-2016) in clause 11.5.1 (air-termination) <em>(volume-2, part-8 building services, section-2 electrical and allied installation) <\/em>mentions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block56\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"viewer-9dh6n\" class=\"xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 _40ACk Ecq9kg bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><strong>\u201cRadioactive air terminals shall not be allowed.
