Type 1 Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) safeguard buildings and equipment from lightning strikes and other high-energy voltage surges.

Type 1 SPDs have a surge-suppressing metal-oxide varistor (MOV) or gas discharge tube (GDT). Type 1 SPDs use MOVs most Since MOVs respond quickly and can handle high-energy surges. GDTs are employed in higher voltage applications where surge currents are too high for MOVs to handle.
